Vancouver video game developer EXOK Games approached RSAAW to partner on designing a new office space which celebrated the joy of game creation, reflecting and reinforcing the creativity and playfulness that define their team’s workflow and game development process.

Beginning with a conical entryway featuring a whimsical iteration of the company logo, the theme of playfulness is infused throughout the space via dramatic blocks of colour and quirky geometries inspired by the company’s existing branding and personality. The programme is divided into a series of areas, each with its own unique palette inspired by its particular function.

Workspaces are deliberately open plan to facilitate collaboration and communication between teams. Flexibility was a paramount consideration and is serviced by ergonomic and modular furnishings, with a concept that was less about the ‘hot desk’ and more about group engagement. Strategically placed interactive zones throughout the space include breakout areas, acoustic pods, and communal spaces designed to cater to a range of user needs within the daily workflow - some fitted with gaming consoles for playtesting prototypes in development, others featuring adjustable lighting and seating optimized for comfort, allowing space for wellness breaks and recharging. Modular furniture and blocks can be moved, grouped, and reconfigured according to evolving needs combine fun with function.

The project combined diverse yet thematic design elements to create a visual and textural synergy throughout the various areas which allowed them to be integrated into a shared, collaborative iteration that offers a diversity of form and function. The result is an animated, lively, engaged workspace which embodies the passion, energy, and attitude of EXOK’s creative team as they continue to push the boundaries of game development, making their mark as industry leaders in a space where innovation knows no limits.
